A very apt song title off Zulu’s debut album, A New Tomorrow, is “We’re More Than This”. The Los Angeles hardcore band has been shifting through heavy dynamics leading up to this point while still remaining in the pit, but their latest preview takes a leap beyond in a heady hip-hop think bubble that spins out into into experimental jazz and R&B for a statement that takes ownership up to their otherness in more ways than just their music. “How I’m ghetto from the whites / Not ‘cause I’m embarrassed of / They just don’t deserve my essence to use for their character / And turnaround and treat me like I’m the caricature,” guitarist Dez Yusuf sets down the bars as well as the lines that define Zulu from the rest of the crowd.
