“Everyone wants to be black, but nobody really wants to be black. People take from our culture, use our language and surround themselves with people from the culture which in turn makes them believe they are a part of it. Those that will benefit from it when people in our community are looked down upon for being how they were born.” That’s what Zulu vocalist Anaiah Lei says of “Fakin’ the Funk (You Get Did)”, the first single from band’s proper debut full-length, A New Tomorrow. And with that puts a million exclamation marks in front of the first chapter of the hard-fused Los Angeles powerviolence band where shit gets real fast and confronts the worst of them. “You take and take / But you will never be / A replication / Of those amongst a shameless sea.” Don’t even try stepping in their shoes, because you’ll get knocked down hard for being such a fuckin’ fake.
