The Mars Volta are now officially fully operational with the news of a comeback tour and their first album in 10 years, an eponymous effort due out in mid-September. At an early perspective, itss first two singles, “Blacklight Shine” and “Graveyard Love”, were welcome detours in the duo’s return form, rediscovering Cedrick Bixler-Zavalva and Omar Rodríguez-López’s prog-rock eccentricities pulled into Latinx constellations. Its latest preview “Vigil” is more outwardly political in tongue-slitting throats, though its cosmic groove continues to evolve that angry energy into a vibe out that carries further.
