There was a point in the late ‘90s where every pop star was making a go at crossover Latin pop music even if they themselves weren’t of the heritage themselves. It felt like every Euro-pop act had a signature track of their own full of Spanish guitars, and given her own adjacency toward that style of pop, it only makes sense that Caroline Polachek would make a run at it herself. By way of co-producer Salvador Navarrete, b.n.a. Sega Bodega, Polachek rekindles that love in pursuit of her own on “Sunset”, her latest standalone single. The swerve away from the past year’s hyper-pop lanes of “Bunny Is a Rider” and “Billions” doesn’t let its foot off the fast pedal, yet its clean line production opens the road for Polachek’s voice to cruise smoothly right into the tinted skyline. “So no regrets / ‘Cause you’re my sunset, fiery red / Forever fearless,” she sings. “And in your arms a warm horizon / Don’t look back / Let’s ride away.” Wherever is the end destination, it’s tempting to find out.
