The neon sensual bangers of Kelela will need to wait, for “Washed Away”, her first new music in four years since 2017′s acclaimed Take Me Apart, is an ambient naturist meditation. “I specifically want to speak to marginalized Black folk and highlight the work we do to find renewal in a world that’s built to make us feel inadequate. This song is the soundtrack to the relief we find after going inward,” she said of the track. As the listen swirls in a white hot sunlight and intentional, breathy poetry, Kelela retraces the path of the self to the seat of the soul. As celestial bursts abundant before submerging, her first blink back to the surface at least gives her a moment to exhale.
