Winston Tower is one of those songwriters who will make sense wherever you put him. Touring with experimental hardcore chaosmakers SOUL GLO? Sure. A five-band bill comprised of jittery DIY Midwestern emo bands? Why not. A fest filled with lo-fi punks? That’ll work, too. The scrappy mess of guitar-pop outside the box which he makes neatly fit within his lanky frame is the prolific Columbus songwriter’s stronghold, and with a new album on the way this week with 100 Acre Wood, now is as good a time as any to acquaint yourself with his uncanny work.
Need more convincing? Check out the music video for its latest highlight “Selfish Shooter”, and tell me you’re not dealing with someone who is on an effortlessly cool streak, between the skateboarding in loafers, sporting his label’s classic K Recs logo tee and various other fit checks, to the gardencore energy all captured in 8mm (note: do not take any cue from Winston’s smoking habits, however.) There must be plenty of caffeine in those tea cups, too, because they match the listen’s fully wired energy in its romantic fixations. “It could be some time / To run away with you / In my mind,” his voice skitters in and out in fits over the nervous current. He’s like a butterfly fluttering near those flower buds, jolted electric.
Winston Hightower’s 100 Acre Wood will be released April 17th on K Records / Perennial.
