Iceage – “Ember”

Contrary to popular romantic mythos, love doesn’t always begin with just a spark. In certain hands, it’s a complete combustible phenomena. From a stellar “Star” dying in romantically morbid sequence to the “Ember” burning from its very beginning, Iceage are working their way backwards from the start of it all in a big bang dopamine leading into the release of the Danish punk band’s newly-announced sixth album, For Love of Grace & the Hereafter, on its second single.

Don’t let the reflection of its opening speckles glockenspiel deceive you on first impressions — there’s danger behind that devilish charm, and as the listen grabs you by the hand to run for dear life in the direction of a spectacular crash, it’s like knowing what disaster awaits while being thrilled at the thought of going along for the ride. “I love you in an ominous way,” Elias Rønnenfelt sings. “Are you willing to pay / Are you willing to break / with all that’s layn before you / Before you’re swept and breathless in the dirty ground?” It could be your funeral, but at least you lived.
