“What’s the point when things always stay the same?,” asks a deadpanned-by-monotony Marbled Eye frontman and guitarist Chris Natividad in the opening rips of “Something’s Different”, the lead single from the Oakland post-punk band’s forthcoming extended play, Forever. Considering it took six years (due to a myriad of circumstances, including the pandemic of all things) for the band to get around to releasing their balmy, atmospheric standout sophomore effort, Read The Air, it doesn’t come as much of a surprise that the four-piece of Natividad, guitarist and vocalist Michael Lucero, bassist Ronnie Portugal, and drummer Alex Shen would remain content with staying stagnant. That carries through the recharge-up of their newest listen. They’re wasting no worry on seconds and doing so with their razor-sharpest edges and blunt force rhythm exposed. There’s no regard to slashing through the malaise here — only an intent to stand out just to feel something as the looming void rings loudly.

Marbled Eye’s Forever will be released May 22nd on Digital Regress.
