That bite out of the poison green apple in the press photo above couldn’t be anymore telling. In the epilogue stages of a breakup, something wicked this way comes if you see Carla dal Forno walking your way. As the lead single and opener from the dreamy Australian songwriter’s forthcoming fourth studio album, Confession, “Going Out” prefaces the rest of the listen by unlocking the darker desires of the heart when it comes to seeing your ex involved with somebody else — who in this instance, just happens to be an old friend. “I’ve tried in vain to hide, I know it’s wrong but I can’t deny it / I have these thoughts that don’t end,” she purrs over a minimalistic threshold of spectral synth-pop. “You will belong to me soon / You will belong to me, there’s no other way.” Her spell isn’t even trying to be ominous — it’s a promise: what you thought was the end is just the beginning.
