Haywire – “Hang Up The Telephone”

Hardcore punks-on-fire Haywire just wrapped up a tour with hometown heroes the Dropkick Murphys for their annual St. Patrick’s Day stint, and without missing a beat, the crew has already hopped onto another — this time, linking up with west coast heavy-hitters Drain and No Pressure.

Somewhere along the lines, they managed to drop a New England-homaging split with the Murphys and filmed a music video for the included new cut, “Hang Up The Telephone”. The fact that it premiered earlier today over on the front page of SPIN is indication enough that their road warrior ways have earned them all of the extra ears and eyeballs the hard way, but even beyond that, there’s no denying that as the band’s profile heightens, we’re hearing and seeing it play out in real time, too.

The listen itself kicks the door in on a refinement of pop-punk with all of their grittier ridges still kept in tact. As for the visuals, while they’ve more often gone the DIY route in past clips, this one pairs them up with scene-centric director Eric Richter, who has helped the likes of Knocked Loose, fleshwater, and Koyo look like rock stars on the small screen. In their case, they’ve opted to go cornball late ’90s punk rock rom-com. Still, you can’t help but cheer them and its cast of young lovers on (and hand clap to the beat, too.)
