Call it a sign of the seasonal shift whenever Fire-Toolz is comes back into bloom. Last year, the moniker of Chicago electronic producer Angel Marcloid helped create the esoteric shoegaze-glitched soundscape behind No Joy’s phenomenal listmaking album, Bugland. This May, she’s on a quest of her own to invite us into her own strange world with the release of her new album and Warp debut, Lavender Networks.
Whereas Jasamine White-Gluz used this sonic energy to form tangents between the synthetic and natural worlds, however, Marcloid’s is decidedly digitally fucked on the album’s lead single “Balam =^..^= Says IPv09082024 Strawberry Head”. For those who prefer their electronic music to fuse found media into hyper-futuristic state converging in high-speed progression, you’re in for a fresh treat. It’s like imagining all that digital junk from the past and the oversaturation of content creation in the present assembling in real time with bounce in its beat, all while being voiced over by jaguar screams ruminating from the Internet void. The listen — like its title — resolves the madness that has come to normalize itself on our senses, albeit as a banger.
