Consider Kitty Ray to be Teen Suicide’s wild card in the band’s already extremist playing field. On “Spiders”, the second single from the experimental punk band’s new album, Nude descending staircase headless, the songwriting polymath who has dabbled in everything from Internet rap, trash pop, vaporwave, and cyberpunk to opening for the post-hardcore mutationists the Sounds of Animals Fighting on her own accord feels right at home stepping in front of her partner and band creator, Sam Ray, in a project first. In that spot, the listen makes great use of an expanding web of sonic dynamics where we get to hear practically all sides of Kitty, be it keeping cool with being paid me off in crypto or spinning out a scream in its ear-bleeding choral riff. Like any arachnid that’s good at its game, her talent to lure you in right before the strike is a role comes natural.
