Cola, is this you? It’s been a couple of years since the Montréal post-punk trio released their assured, sublimely sidewinding sophomore effort, The Gloss, but I’m not sure the “post-punk” tagline even applies to where they are in their creative lives today after giving “Hedgesitting” — the first single off their forthcoming new album, Cost of Living Adjustment — a few spins. Fence angles are dissolved through the listen’s breakbeat shuffle of rhythm set in perpetual motion by bassist Ben Stidworthy and percussionist Evan Cartwright as synth twinkles poke their way into view on the soft tear riffs of Tim Darcy’s flanged guitar. “When you were young, you came to make it / These are panic punches, but your arms have grown,” he sings. It’s like throwing a fist out halfway with gusto, only to ask yourself, “What’s the point?” Defeated by life as may be, it’s still not stopping Cola from extending their over-thinking punk rock-and-a-hard-place sound’s reach…
