“When Jesus come back / All you motherfuckers are going to pay!” With that, thank god for the God-mad version of Alan Sparhawk that is a hypocritical Christians’ day of reckoning through song, for his own resurrection. This is not to say that the new paths forward into experimental electronic pop and bluegrass devotionals since the untimely end of Low haven’t been fascinating and beautiful in their own right, but there’s something about the holy spirit ignited within Sparhawk — here on “JCMF”, joined by his son Cyrus Sparhawk on bass and his former Retribution Gospel Choir bandmate, Eric Pollard on drums in a brimstone of slowburn doom — and the most come-correct interpretation of the Gospel without greed, hate, and abuse of power dirtying the ethos of it all that really puts into frame how at this point, we could us a second coming to burn all those false idols and their deceptive prophets to the ground before beginning anew again.

Alan Sparhawk’s “JCMF” single is available now on Sub Pop.
