The name of the new Prism Shores album is called Softest Attack, which is a very fitting descriptor for the Montreal noise-pop band’s sound, being that they create ultra-fuzzed up and spangled out turns into noise-pop that very much go hard even when the four members of the band are layering on the harmony. It made them a Buzz Sound early last year behind the cold weather comfort of their sophomore breakthrough — and one of that scene’s standouts — Out From Underneath.
We’ll have to wait until springtime to hear the rest of the album, but for now, they’re offering a much-needed warm-up through reverbed pedal effects brushing through clean-strummed chords with its first preview “Kid Gloves”. The twee debts to ’80s and ’90s indie-pop remain stitched into their fabric here, but you also can’t help but feel like these gloves are about to come off in the fast, punky momentum in which the listen slips through the cracks toward you.
