Friko – “Seven Degrees”

Though they generally made a welcomely noisy entrance onto the scene, with adulting, it’s been equally intriguing to witness how those Hallagallo kids really have become drawn into crate-digging deep into classic rock lore for inspo. There were some hints of that on Friko’s stylistically-faceted 2024 breakthrough debut, Where we’ve been, where we go from here, yet “Seven Degrees” — the lead single from the Chicago band’s sophomore effort, Something Worth Waiting For — immediately chooses a clearer focus.

Whereas Sharp Pins’ Kaye Slater has got the early parts of the Fab Four’s sound recovered through his modern slant on power-pop, Friko’s floats through the ether of their classic psychedelia folk-pop years when view began to get a little more trippy. The symphonic bombast is florid yet unassuming without sounding like pastiche, leaving its fringes on its sleeves. Throughout it, there’s an earnest in vocalist and guitarist Niko Kapetan sending out signals for connection through their sound. It only makes sense that the music would tie together timelines, too.
