Kim Gordon – “NOT TODAY”

With her sibling albums in 2019’s NO HOME RECORD and 2024’s THE COLLECTIVE, Kim Gordon reinvented herself in her first solo offerings since the demise of the radically evolutionary noise rock icons Sonic Youth as an experimental trap beat electronic music auteur with who still influences a future podium in sound that will be forever hard-pressed to be replicated.

“NOT TODAY”, the lead single from Gordon’s third solo album, PLAY ME, maintains her creative collaboration with producer Justin Raisen (Charli XCX, Yves Tumor,) though she’s not content in keeping that same image of herself in a position of stagnancy. Trees are weeping, grass is wet, her dress is a mess, and there’s a hole in her heart. Where’s her gum? A Postmate mention further impresses her satirical commentaries on modern consumerism close to the lens. All this, amidst a redesign of a soft whirring collision between Motorik beats, feedback, and an aesthetically “chill” hum right beneath their surface that’s not unlike our new norm: a constant battle to keep focus in a very distracting, loud world.

Kim Gordon’s PLAY ME will be released March 13th on Matador Records.
