Cashier – “Like I Do”

Name drops are a good way of getting a band some buzz in the early stages of their career. The Bandcamp profile for Cashier references Dinosaur Jr., Narrow Head, Nothing, and Whirr as others who the Lafayette underground rockers have shared the stage with so far.

That’s cool, but beyond the loudness in their guitar-surged sound, the four-piece of vocalist and guitarist Kylie Gaspard, guitarist Joseph Perillo, bassist Austyn Wood, and drummer Zachary are still doing their own thing beyond modern shoegaze and grunge revival circles in what’s more reminiscent of artsy post-hardcore right before the Aughts broke (all in spite of being the latest signee to Julia’s War!) but without any barriers next to it. Lively, in the most Cajun of senses, to say the least.

With “Like I Do”, the lead single from the band’s debut EP, The Weight, they aim for what they describe as “a piece of generic rock” and still come out sounding more distinct than 80% of today’s indie rock acts who’ve that pick-me energy to be deemed anything but the same as the rest. At the very least, the vibes are right because it’s a song about feeling out the vibes with someone else. “Do you wanna know / What feels like I do?,” Gaspard sings. That’d be a resounding “yes.”

Cashier’s The Weight will be released March 13th on Julia’s War.
