What began with a new existential thesis statement seems to ending on a bold, blistering epitaph. “We Were Never the Same”, the latest preview and closing track from Converge’s 11th non-collaborative studio album, Love Is Not Enough, is 1000% exclamatory in its ambitions to harvest the entirety of the world’s chaos and ruthless nature into their already-extremist sound — theatrical metalcore ultraviolence unbound by any outside forces or distraction — that demands we not overlook our own culpability in escalating matters. “Why do we all gather to mourn / Yet not to cherish?,” ponders Jacob Bannon, and there’s no room to avoid the question as the band rips clarity into perspective. We already know the answer, too. All we have to do is look around — and at — ourselves to figure out why.
Converge’s Love Is Not Enough will be released February 13th on Deathwish Inc. / Epitaph Records.
