Nyxy Nyx – “Devil hands”

The single artwork for Nyxi Nyx's "Devil's hand".

Nyxy Nyx apparently don’t like being referred to as a shoegaze band despite the buzz behind them suggesting they’re at least tangently derivative of it, perhaps due to a guilt by association with a bunch of bands who are on the Julia’s War roster. It really sounds like the Philly rockers have been doing their most to undo that perception ever since releasing last year’s breakthrough proper debut, Cult Classics, Vol. 1 in the meantime. Before 2025 was up, they dropped the surprise extended play, NYXY NYX self-titled, which clarified their broader underground rock excavations with higher fidelity, and now they’re already back with a new one-off single entitled “Devil hands”.

It’s a sluggishly mellow listen with a far-off stare in its daze (not to be confused with ‘gaze) that definitely ponders bigger atmospheres in their sound, but from the cozy comfort of a living room couch somewhere on Earth — geographically, very Boston DIY scene circa 2013 if you had to pinpoint a vibe to it. “felt cute, might delete later ;)” reads its caption on Bandcamp. Even when being coy about it, Nyxi Nyx are really begin to realize they’ve got our attention to what they’ll be doing next by a grip.

Nyxy Nyx’s “Devil hands” is available now.
