Luster – “Don’t Need You”

Since founding members Adrian Castillo and Alvin Carillo formed Luster back in 2019, they’ve kept an enigmatic veil around the band that’s placed less focus on the who’s of it all and more so on curating their sound, even if it at times moves in and out of just that. Mystery is no new adage within the contemporary shoegaze scene — Wisp, glixen, and julie are successful testaments to that — yet there’s a pureness to how Luster continue to strive to separate themselves from the same feedback pools even if their sound bleeds into it eventually. With their latest single “Don’t Need You”, Luster do so with acceleration. Palpitating drum samples and frayed, fidgeting electronics hard wire woozy careening guitars into high speed, made all the more bleary to the human eye, but not the ear where this crystallizes by way of Nick Bassett’s recording. The sensation is like being captured in a moment of escape with the air whisking past your skin.

Luster’s “Don’t Need You” single is available now The Funeral Party.
