Sad13 – “Dr. Christmas”

Pretty sure this isn't what Andy Williams had in mind when it came to those scary ghost stories during the holiday season, but in

Speedy Ortiz frontwoman Sadie Dupuis is going 14 years strong as the indie queen of Christmas in her annual tradition of homecrafting a holiday-themed song under her synth-pop solo moniker Sad13. In the year of a book-cooked, broken economy and healthcare system where hardly anybody’s got enough money to pay the bills but the bills just keep mounting, there’s no need for fantastical Grinches out here when your PCP will do just fine, as the bewitched songwriter plays a sprite jingle to “Dr. Christmas” filled with playful top shop effects over lyrical twists and rhyme painting the scene red and green (not in the holiday color sense) with long waiting room times, increased deductibles, and your latest invoice to come. “Can you fix my life / Without breaking my card? / I’ve got a shopping list / Your bills go on top of it / Don’t give me a blue holiday,” she sings. Andy Williams probably didn’t account for these kind of scary ghost stories being told when singing about the alleged most wonderful time of the year, but then again, you could also make a decent living out of being a musician back then, too…
