We’re probably going to be hearing a lot about Robber Robber in the New Year, who recently announced their signing with the great NYC indie label Fire Talk with the release of the singles highlight “Talkback”. If you’re still catching up on what the Burlington four-piece are all about, well, I’m not so sure these pages have any clear cut answer for you, seeing that their debut LP, Wild Guess, was just that when it comes to categorization in the best kind of way in hearing them put the freak back into subterranean rock that zig-zags across post-punk, shoegaze, and redefining whatever it is we’re referring to as “indie rock” these days.
Before the year closes out, they’re keeping on with predictability avoidancy by tackling a historical hit in Elvis Presley’s “Suspicious Minds”. The distance between what the King did in 1969 (or, songwriter Mark James in 1968 if you want to get technical about it…) and what Robber Robber are doing with the song in 2025 couldn’t be any further, however, with it fizzling in noisy guitar-pop distortion and Nina Cates’ bleary vocal view rather than swaggering country-soul grandeur (because relationships and human’s deceptive intentions can be messy like that.) Get caught in the trap below…
