Tigers Jaw haven’t put out a new album in five years in the linear timeline, yet time doesn’t really mean much of anything when your music causes you to visit different destinations from all points in your life in the same instance. Listening to “Head is Like a Sinking Stone”, the lead single from the the Scranton melodic emo rockers’ newly announced album Lost On You, is like that.
For co-vocalist and guitarist Ben Walsh, he went off the deep end, seeking lyrical inspiration from a recurring childhood dream where he’d find himself submerged under water after jumping off the high dive at the local pool. Though something most might consider nightmarish, what he remembers most when looking back at it is how beautiful the sun looked through the rippling waters above him.
In the present moment, it all becomes metaphorical for a relationship lost with only painfully wistful memories there to remind him of it happening. “Time got away from me / But the truth ran away with you,” he sings. From the sounds of it, their pop melodic ‘core riffs have been fully recharged inside of Will Yip’s studio, too, making it all the easier for Tigers Jaw to chase the past down to better understand their present.
Tigers Jaw’s Lost On You will be released March 27th on Hopeless Records.
