Robber Robber – “Talkback”

Robber Robber are an underground rock band who just last year released the kind of debut album that in retrospect, probably would have caught more fire today if given the proper promotional shine and timing due to its idiosyncratic divergence in styles still coming together. Was Wild Guess — like its early standout “Sea or War” (which also arrived with a music video directed by some fellow local named Greg Freeman) — an extension of shoegaze? Perhaps a contemporary art angle on post-punk? Indie rock on acid? No answers beyond maybe that’s just the weird energy of Burlington, Vermont going for it all in one sound.

At any rate, they’re catching fire now, or more astutely, Fire Talk, whose roster they’ve joined ahead of their next album and who will also be reissuing the aforementioned Wild Guess. The band’s new single keeps that wonderful ambiguity in discerning definition all the more intriguing. Its zipping riffs and split ends herald a new sort of “rock revivalism” (again!) as vocalist and bassist Nina Cates head races circles around her own head, replaying the argument with what she should have said. “Clever, quick, the double threat, I win.” It’s neither here nor there on the map, with no signs of slowing down. In this instance, a fit of retrospect favors Robber Robber’s momentum.

Robber Robber’s “Talkback” single is available now on Fire Talk.
