As of this week, SPEED are $80,000 richer thanks to a very nice cash prize won in their native Australia (the state of New South Wales, to be exact) where the government actually supports the artistic contributions of their musicians. That’s probably half a century’s worth of streaming royalties or something insane in industry terms. Nevertheless, before 2025 even capped off with that win, the Sydney powerhouse hardcore band had already been on a run behind the success of last year’s debut full-length, ONLY ONE MODE, and an endless touring regimen that most recently saw them criss-crossing the entire United States this past summer opening for TURNSTILE. Needless to say, they’ve earned it all through DIY blood, sweat, and tears.
ALL MY ANGELS, their latest three-track extended play, is more than just a victory lap staying in cruise control. It’s a gear-shift that keeps their engine running on max while looking back on the hard road they’ve taken to get to get here. Being away most of the time — often half-way around the world — means missing the big moments and coming to terms with the fact that life will happen regardless, for better or for worse, whether you’re there for it or not. SPEED confront this catch-22 head-on by doing what they’ve willed as their super strength: honoring their community through really fucking fast and heavy music.
Ripping through the speakers right from its start, “AIN’T MY GAME” staves off the breaking point with full-chested fuck you’s and an intense head charge of iron-edged riffs. It makes for some of the five-piece’s most explicit metal moments yet and reason to get excited for how much more they might potentially bulk up. “PEACE” retreats to hardcore pits, though its tranquility is found in finding harmony between the blur and the D-beat. At listen’s end, the crew delivers a new statement of purpose, as “ALL MY ANGELS” summons a eulogy for the hardest real ones which vocal Jem Siow vows to avenge until his final breath. Who knows how the band plans on investing that $80,000, but even without it, they’d still be sounding rich with what they’ve got.
