There’s a great case to be made that Converge might be eternal. The more time passes, the more relentless the Boston metalcore veterans sound in spite of a world that would rather have most of us — and especially a force of fury like them — dead and gone. “Love Is Not Enough”, the title track and first preview from their forthcoming 10th studio album, is a reminder for this modern day nightmare that you’ll have to do a hell of a lot more damage to make the vocalist Jacob Bannon, guitarist and in-house producer Kurt Ballou, bassist Nate Newton, and drummer Ben Koller bend their knees toward any force of mankind threatening to poison the soul.
As for the music itself, the listen furthers every step of the way they’ve thrashed and combusted before it by allowing their hungriest instincts for real aggression to lead with no filters in place, beyond Ballou’s ear for meticulous metalwork. “Truth is never wrong / Time is never right / We can’t see the past / When the present blinds,” Bannon’s voice serrates as everything burns to ash around he and the band. Through the flames, they remain a timeless beacon of reckoning when we need it most.
