Jana Horn – “Go on, move your body”

“Nothing prepares you for this / Or is a cure, no way,” Jana Horn’s voice barely fades into view during the opening moments of “Go on, move your body”, the lead single from the New York City-by-way-of-Austin songwriter’s forthcoming self-titled album. Life as we know it is its own kind of hell, yet throughout her recent standouts in 2022’s breakthrough Optimism and 2023’s The Window Is the Dream, Horn has always managed to be something of a mystic in escaping reality or defying time. There’s no solve here, however, when reality comes crashing through the physical plane and practically brings you to a halt. Paired with its slowcore tilt of nimbling guitars and plotted drum and basslines with the occasional freak frequency of flute and clarinet appearing with no direction, her song is the embodiment of when you’re more or less just drifting through the day. “I heard an apocalypse stir and wait, and ask / “Is this all there is?” Your body may be moving, but you’re barely living in it.
