We need more artists like Jimmy Eat World holding their ground as physical media traditionalists. The emo rock veterans apparently don’t view their music as properly released until it’s available on such formats, which means that a few of the singles they’ve released since 2019’s Surviving can’t be considered officially out under those rules. That changes later this month when they release the EP Something(s) Loud which will feature all those such tracks plus this freshly unearthed gem called “Failure”.
The listen’s origins trace back to the Surviving sessions, but even more telling is that it was engineered and mixed by Ken Andrews, founding member and vocalist of cult scene hero space-rockers Failure. Big riffs and a heaviness in its gravity are stylistic homage to them on this one with reverb pedals cranked high and Jim Adkins and company delivering one of their more menacing performances in recent memory, lullabying its chorus as a punctuation mark. In short, another success from one of alt-rock’s most consistent forces.
