Drop Nineteens – “Fools”

Drop Nineteens reunited nearly 30 years after fading into obscurity before a new found interest in the shoegaze scene’s deeper layers resurfaced as a by-product of its current revival era. While some band’s might merely be content playing off legacy alone, it’s been a miracle run hearing a band who was as niche as they come not only return sounding just as good, but actually better than where they left off upon fully reactivating with 2023’s comeback album, Hard Light. “Fools”, a preview from the Boston quintet’s next effort, makes you wonder if the second chapter of their story hasn’t even gotten to its best parts yet.

In a sense, this is their love letter to trusting the creative process on its own timing. “More than writing it, this song happened to us,” band leader Greg Ackell describes of its conception. We’re privy to experiencing that in how the listen sprouts and coils around their bodies like a vine of metal. Searing guitars emit a soft static from the guided friction and every inch skyward is solidified with a bolt. Much has been said about recording mixer Chris McLaughlin working with Kendrick and Beyoncé, but did you know he also engineered tracks for Blonde Redhead and Model Actriz, too? Drop Nineteens’ monument is really coming together here…
