Turns out Code Orange was in fact not FOREVER, but in the blistering LED lights of their sound going out (at least for the moment,) members Jami Morgan and Eric “Shade” Balderose have stepped out of the shadows as the duo behind the mysterious experimental industrial project NOWHERE2RUN. Quietly, the pair have been releasing highly collaborative EPs and singles over the past few years which have featured an eclectic company of of guests such as UK heavy-gazers Loathe and alternative pop songwriter Siiickbrain. Their forthcoming extended play, What Did You Do?, revels in their fiendish persona with a Halloween release date, bringing along the likes of noise-rap queen Backxwash and punk rappers H09909 for the debauchery.
Lead single, “Motives”, is purely NOWHERE2RUN for the uninitiated, however. It’s a mood-perfect introduction for those who last left off with Code Orange’s 2023 swan song, Above, and the realization that the Pittsburg crew had brought that vehicle as far as it could go in cyborging metalcore, alt-rock, and electronic electrocutions into the same circuitry. This is a segued path which hears Morgan and Balderose focusing in on a hard techno energy coarsed with an industrial-metal edge, and very much feels like the reason their past lives needed to die while their intentions were meant to be at this stage in their creative evolution.
