If you stopped by the Run for Cover Records booth at this past weekend’s Best Friends Forever Festival, then you may have caught that Knumears’ new single “Breaking Ground” got its secret release into the hands of the crowd’s very emo physical media enthusiasts. That makes sense, as the trio of guitarist and vocalist Matthew Cole, bassist and vocalist Dante Garcia II, and drummer Frankie Lopez are torchbearers of the many classic post-hardcore bands whose names packed this year’s lineup.
In joining RFC’s Summer Shade, the imprint directed by Fury’s Madison Woodward, for its release in peak autumn, the DIY California screamo band have picked their arrival onto the greater scene perfectly with a listen that rewards all that is chaos turned inside-out under the serrated studio veneer of Jack Shirley, whose production lineage behind Deafheaven, Loma Prieta, and Gouge Away similarly blisters screams in a cathartic storm of electricity — arguably even further to a point where speakers can’t contain it all in its climax. Breaking ground? Perhaps breaking sound barriers might be true here, too…
Knumears’ “Breaking Ground” single is available now on Summer Shade / Run for Cover Records.
