Kareem Rahma’s Tiny Gun – “Time to Bleed”

There’s this frustrating tendency among many newer, promising artists — especially those in NYC or Los Angeles — who sound like they should be going somewhere, but the biggest thing holding them back is how they rarely leave the bubble of their big city limits. Tiny Gun made sure this year that they didn’t fall prey to the same fate by really putting themselves out there in front of audiences you’d not expect of a small yet buzzworthy post-punk band featuring an Internet personality and former members of YVETTE and Motion Studies who never caught a real break. They showed up on the small stage in front of a bunch of white yupsters at the Newport Folk Festival. They headed all the way out to the west coast for a one-off date at Outside Lands in San Francisco. As you’ll see in the music video for their fresh single, “Time to Bleed”, they even played to an audience of wild senior citizens inside of a retirement community.

It all adds up to a pretty good indication that the Brooklyn five-piece are making the most of whatever’s left of this moment. The concept isn’t the first time we’ve heard the dudes waxing existential on the matter — see this highlight from last year’s varied bag breakthrough EP, No Worries If Not — but you can hear them putting more effort into maximizing the collective strengths of everyone in the band with equal space to flex. Subway Takes talker Kareem Rahma’s motor mouth defense has no limits in fatigue. Guitarists Tyler McCauley and Joe Tirabassi cut rough diamonds inside dirty garages while oscillating darker atmospheres through searing feedback. All the while, drummer Dale Eisinger and bassist Matt Morello’s elevated cardio rhythm persists that dance-punk will always be an en vogue display of creative endurance. It’s the start of the party. It’s music for the last call. For these end times — and if we can survive ’em, the golden years — Tiny Gun sound like they’ve got all the time in the world to let it all out.
