“This is a love song to a future child. It is so moving to me that even though this child does not exist in the form of a child yet, all of the matter that will one day make up their being is already in the world. And of course this is true of all things that have ever existed. So even though I’m talking about a kid that I want to have one day, I’m really talking about the principle that everything is totally connected.”
As the resident master of Zen Buddhism within Agriculture’s ecstatic black metal energy that has since transcended further out from being just that, Dan Meyer’s forward on the final preview from the band’s new album The Spiritual Sound is profoundly existential. The listen itself astutely sounds like the laws of matter being reflected in sonic form, with layers of distortion-drenched guitars heavily submerging it within the womb during its initial gestation before Meyer’s voice sparks the particles to build and grow into their own limbs. As they flesh out and their characteristic features become visible, that which binds the universe becomes more visible as well — awesomely and beautiful, at that. “Just as brightest day becomes the night / Every moment touches all of time,” he sings. Truly, this is like the miracle of everything forming right in front of your ears.
Agriculture’s The Spiritual Sound will be released October 3rd on The Flenser.
