Peel Dream Magazine – “Venus In Nadir”

It’s Peel Dream Magazine season, once again. Last September, the florid Los Angeles art-pop trio led by Joe Stevens released the articulately impressionistic and listmaking effort, Rose Main Reading Room. It was — at least at that moment — an all-encompassing listen that encapsulated the many different sonic narratives which the band had written into their own story arc to date. The inspiration to expound on that seems to have come to them quickly. Its follow-up, a mini album entitled Taurus, arrives at October’s start.

First single “Venus In Nadir” is as fall weather season as it gets. Its twee-combed guitars and crisp, brisk folk jangle pairs well with Stevens’ seasonal observations paralleling that of a romantic decay. “Long November / It molds your mind / And come December / It’s a full decline,” he sings of calculating the distance of the sun from our bodies, which turns out to be no closer to that a fading lover. “Arms are tender / They loosen in time / And I surrender / If you won’t be mine.” You’ll want to grab an autumn sweater to keep yourself warm for when you eventually find yourself just as lonely…

Peel Dream Magazine’s Taurus will be released October 1st on Topshelf Records.
