A Country Western – ‘Four-Team Dream Machine’

Last year, A Country Western did what many of their peers in today’s experimental shoegaze scene are just beginning to do now by making guitar-driven indie rock that’s decidedly less refracted by distortion and more so straight-forward with immaculate hooks while still being bound to the fuzz with their listmaker, Life on the Lawn. They just can’t get away from their roots, however, as are about to head out on tour in support of dream-pop extraordinaire Winter, who just released a really good album in her own right in Adult Romantix, and as is the M.O. these days of most artists leading up to that time, they’re giving the audience some new (old?) sounds new to sink into before headed out on the road with the new double single, Four-Team Dream Machine.

Though A Country Western typically presents themselves as a four-piece, “Clouds” and “GG” were respectively written and recorded by members Garrett Miades and Derek Hengemihle in solo fashion. The band’s Instagram mentions one song is fresh while the other one was an oldie dusted off for the occasion, but it’s up to us to figure out which. Because “GG” runs more parallel to the sensory-spliced lines of their TAGABoW-influenced scenery, that one sounds like the obvious pick to be the unearthed cut, but then again, there’s some serious lo-fi ragged pop aesthetics playing out on the former that wouldn’t  sound too far removed from when Alex G was carving out his corner with that sound in their Philly scene either. It’s a Dream Machine and time machine in one. Listen for yourself…
