Charlotte Gainsbourg – “Blurry Moon”

The commercialization of the Twin Peaks aesthetic is everywhere these days, and that’s become even more so widespread since we lost its legendary creator, David Lynch, earlier this year. That’s capitalism doing what it does best — or worst? — in those occasions, as usual. This makes “Blurry Moon” — a new song from Charlotte Gainsbourg — somewhat of a mixed emotions experience considering it’s been six years since we last heard anything from the perpetually chic French chanteuse and actress, while acknowledging its inspo mood board knows exactly what it’s doing.

In a collaboration with Saint Laurent, she teamed with the luxury fashion house’s creative director Anthony Vacarello in his directorial debut for the visuals behind the listen. They clearly pay homage to Lynch through a surreal sepia lens as she glides down Mulholland Drive with no one concretely behind the wheel. All the while, the song itself twinkles and winks at those sad-eyed dream-pop lullabies Lynch, composer Angelo Badalamenti, and the heavenly presence of Julee Cruise weaved throughout the dark, cinematic ambient soundtrack instrumentals. Under the production hands of her Rest collaborator, SebastiAn, it’s flawless in execution. Seeing as Gainsbourg has already proven herself an immaculate preserver of the French-pop canon, you really can’t be mad at how good this Lynchian filter looks on her even in an obvious light.
