With “Lasting Impression”, it’s becoming more and more apparent that Ava Luna aren’t even trying to exist within the same solar system as the band they were six years ago when they released their 2019 EP, Pigments. Then again, few can probably say that about themselves with everything that has happened in life, using 2020 as its rear view. These times have hardened us all! The latest preview from the Brooklyn four-piece’s forthcoming eponymous return effort is an apt creative rebirth from them that does just as much with that notion and — if not more — with less. They’re more subterranean rock than cosmic pop while maintaining the avant nature of their approach to it all. Bassist Julian Fader and drummer Ethan Bassford’s elastic rhythm makes for the perfect conduit between Felicia Douglass and Carlos Hernandez’s slinking vocal interplay and the errant electric guitar feedback that preaches ominously. “I won’t keep you wondering / I’m the bigger person, also no one else is serving now / So seek help.” There’s minimal space junk in their way nowadays, which means there’s no reason why you can’t say you weren’t warned…
