AFI – “Holy Visions”

More than 30 years and 12 albums into their career together as a band, AFI are exactly where they should be on “Holy Visions”: scene veterans entering their next evolution as the natural heirs to the gothic post-punk canon, convincingly so as if they’ve been making this kind of music since day one. The latest preview from Silver Bleeds the Black Sun... pairs well with its predecessor preview “Behind the Clock” in worshipping at the alter of Sisters of Mercy and Bauhaus. There needn’t be any reason to explain why Davey Havok is singing of glowing girls, rosary beads, and supernatural visions conjuring him to some place called “home” beyond the fact that its aesthetically on point with everything you could ask for when indulging the dark of night and the mysterious things that can happen when you’ve surpassed this physical plane. Guitar flicker dangerously sharp while rhythm bleeds black like a dancing heartbeat against them, too, making this apparition the real deal.
