Prewn – “System”

Another dollar, another day. And so it goes, you find yourself slugging it out with the daily grind with an anxious avoidance relationship with the world around you while doing your most to stave off the loneliness in your head. Prewn, the moniker of Los Angeles-by-way-of-Northampton underground rock songwriter Izzy Hagerup knows this drill like an old friend, and with “System”, the lead single and title track from her forthcoming album, she’s almost mechanical in waging yet another dizzying combat against her own paralyzing thoughts and the encroaching unease mounting behind her. A climbing wall of distortion with their stress compacted by strings less so eloquent and more so menacing add on the pressure, inching closer by the second. “The clouds won’t go away / They keep on coming again and again.” Then again, those languid guitars sure sound like a sweet release when you just give in to it all. It’s the devil you know, especially when it comes from within.
