Listening to Deftones can be like an unexplainable religious experience that you welcome with open arms. The lush crush of metallic waves flooding in. Big rigged bass riffs and heavy drums quaking the walls. Chino Moreno ascendent to it all like some kind of holy spirit with a tongue of fire controlling the sound’s beautiful fury. It’s no wonder that with “milk of the madonna” — the second single from the heavy rock gods’ 10th studio album, private music — the band has the antidote to the darker sides of hyper-religiosity when they themselves are familiar with similar tools of sorcery. For those already not so easily fooled by organized forms of praise and worship, Deftones at the very least prove their own indisputable evidence as to why they’re one of the most seminal architects in today’s modern alternative landscape in their continuous ability to turn all of that rushing water into new wine. Intoxicate you slowly, indeed…
Deftones’ private music will be released August 22nd on Reprise Records / Warner Records.
