Hayley Williams – “Glum”

“Glum” is both something we’ve never and already heard from the ever-evolving creative being that is Hayley Williams. It’s also proof positive that when left to her own devices, you never what to expect to come your way from her, especially when there’s 17 singles worth of artistic material to pore over. In this instance, it’s been a minute since we heard anything even remotely resembling a big emo ballad from the Paramore frontwoman, especially since her own band has gone the way of bending shapes more colorful toward art-pop and post-punk in recent efforts.

“Glum”, however, is a return deep into the emotive trenches where tropes of feeling lost and idle seem like familiar hurdles, but pitch-tuned to just the right experimental alien vibe, it’s bringing new hues onto old problems in what’s become a painfully endless adulting process for the elder millennial crowd. “On my way to 37 years / I do not know if I’ll ever know / What in the living fuck I’m doing here,” she admits. “Does anyone know if this is normal?” One thing’s for sure: if by asking these big questions, Williams leaves little to wonder if embracing past selves gets in the way of transformation.

Hayley Williams’ “glum” single is available now on Post Atlantic.
