The hits just keep on coming Shaki Tavi’s way leading up to the release of the Los Angeles shoegaze songwriter’s newest effort, Minor Slip, and it’s not just about the quality of the songs we’re talking about here — though they’ve all been pretty impressive, too. For Leon Mason, it’s when life keeps hitting you like a freight train, you feel all kinds of fucked up for it, all the while gray clouds perpetually hang out overhead. All of that becomes a sonic metaphor with the way Mason creates huge waves of noise-pop distortion to pummel on and on and on. And yet, he’s somehow managing to withstand it — perhaps because he’s so beyond numb and checked out. “I’ve been goin’ through some bad times, baby / It’s enough to drive a sane man crazy / Funny you should ask,” he coolly volunteers in its earliest moments. He totally doesn’t let you forget it either.
