How Much Art – “PR”

How Much Art features a host of (mostly) New England hardcore and indie rock familiars. At its front helm is Patrick Flynn, present-day scene hero and frontman of Fiddlehead and Have Heart alongside his bandmate in drummer Shawn Costa, former GEL guitarist Maddi Nave, Darin Edward Thompson and Justin Mantell of the departed Boston dream-pop band QUALMS respectively on guitar and synths, and Adam Gonsalves of New Bedform melodic hardcore outfit So Automatic on bass. It’s telling from “PE”, the first preview from the band’s soon-to-come debut EP, that beyond Flynn’s infinitely passionate howl, the six-piece want to create a different layer of themselves beyond what we already know.

First impressions succeed at that, introducing them as a synth-driven post-punk statement with a harder edge behind it (think the direction of High Vis have gone in with space-age currents flowing through the electrical wires.) While Flynn has oft been more emotively descript in his other works’ lyrics, his words here in How Much Art provoke thoughts all the more obtuse, though potentially not any less political. “I can’t believe how you feel so right / When everything feels so wrong,” he shouts, as Nave’s vocals move over their rough exterior applying a reflectory coating. This is one bold way to get the word out of your arrival.

How Much Art’s “PR” is available now on Convulse Records.
