Shaki Tavi – “Foam”

Minor Slip is the upcoming sophomore album from Los Angeles DIY shoegaze scene songwriter Leon Manson’s project, Shaki Tavi, and yet none of it sounds like music that is under-adorned or humble on its latest preview, “Foam”. The heavy volume doesn’t hold back even by a decibel on this one — Deftones were just mentioned on these pages, and yet, somehow, a dude with a one-man-band approach to recording in a small studio sounds like he can meet even the biggest alternative heroes at the arena with the scale of his sound. Seismic riffs, an ascendent live electrical wire spiraling its way up bulging rock walls, and cratering through Big Beat drums has the sonic boom factor to smash heads to stone through spaces just as equally large. Manson may be in nihilism mode here, but you feel everything.
