Marissa Nadler – “Hatchet Man”

If there’s one thing that you need to know about Marissa Nadler leading into any new album rollout, it’s that she’s going to send chills up your spine somewhere down the line with a good ol’ fashioned murder ballad. We’ve heard the Gothic Americana singer-songwriter adorn lullabies with stories of blood lust and death in the past, and now you can add “Hatchet Man”, the latest preview from her forthcoming album, New Radiations, to her growing list of songs you might not want to play before heading out on a date night with a devishly handsome beau. Here, Nadler embodies the outer body experience of our narrator in peril. The glow of her halo against the outlines of her hatchet man reflect the way Nadler has this uncanny ability to luminate light even during the darkest moments happening behind the human psyche. “Couldn’t make them love me only / Would’ve been better just to live with loneliness,” she serenades the sinister heart. Perhaps she’s convinced him that the latter is an even more terrifying end. And just like that, she slips away without a hair over her head being split…
