Hundred Bliss – “Ketamine Head”

Hundred Bliss is one of those familiar names you may be noticing popping up more and more on top-to-bottom solid lineups for hardcore and hardcore-adjacent shows, but there’s not a whole lot to go off as to who they are beyond a Los Angeles quarter featuring the first names only of River, Garrett, Nate, and Jeff. In a couple of weeks, they’ll be releasing their debut EP, aptly titled EP1, so maybe some of those plot holes will be filled in in time? Until then, its lead single “Ketamine Head” is a really curious introduction that feeds off the unknowns in their energy, wiring together rigid post-hardcore slabs with stop-start post-punk stammering, and obtuse shouts into chorus with a manufacturing-like precision. Its guitar bridge gets a little gothy but also sweeping you up into a moment of anthem, bridging the timelines between Rollins-era Black Flag, Mission of Burma, early Interpol, Rohnert Park-era CEREMONY, and Creative Adult. “If looks deceive / The plasticine / The mold it dyes / The psycho scene,” goes one string of lines. Believing will need to rely on hearing in this case, because whatever Hundred Bliss is building toward is getting ready to rearrange brains.

Hundred Bliss’ EP1 will be self-released June 27th.
