Nihilistic Easyrider – “Getaway Plan”

Trapped Under Ice and Angel Du$t’s Justice Tripp occasionally lets his experimental freak-pop flag fly as COLD MEGA. CEREMONY’s resident howler Ross Farrar explores experimental post-punk in a spoken word prose as R.J.F. CITIZEN Mat Kerekes makes all sorts of beautifully weird alternative detours under his own name. It seems like all the heavyweights in the hardcore and heavy music scene these days need an outlet to be anything but, and Nihilistic Easyrider is that freewheeling vehicle for Narrow Head frontman Jacob Duarte. Even so, “Getaway Plan”, the lead single from his informal debut, DELUXE EDITION, is more of a loose concept for listeners’ first look that reflects years of personal indulgences beyond the hard space-rock atmospheres which the Houston band rocket toward otherwise, in a no expectations mixtape approach that blurs together all phases of his life through sound. Here, he’s indulging in fantasies of suburban escapism being powered up by ’90s pop-rock alternative vibes. Former tourmate and current labelmate Graham Hunt helps him set heavier feedback into the rearview in its bright-as-day production. The plans might always be falling through, but Duarte’s song still hits all of the sweet spots along the way.
