Graham Hunt cites Post Malone and Morgan Wallen’s “I Had Some Help” and Less Than Jake’s “Look What Happened” as two songs that spawned the creation of “Frog in the Shower”, the latest preview from the Wisonsonian guitar-pop wizard’s Run for Cover Records debut, Timeless World Forever. Don’t let that slop detract you from pressing play, although poptimism does get its due credit to a certain extent throughout the listen, as the former Midnight Rerun frontman does his most to dumb down the verse-chorus-and-hook structure to the lowest common denominator as best as he can using his own indie rock intelligence. There’s probably just as much, if not more, to be credited to Rivers Cuomo’s stupidly dope lyricism and Weezer’s nerdcore at its early critical peak to be found in this song than there is a karaoke country-pop or ska-punk crossover effect in this grungy jam rife with obtuse metaphorical reincarnations about amphibians, flowers, and ancient cats, thankfully. If Hunt had some help, it’s from those accidental pop stars who figured out how to fake a hit just the same.
