Perhaps Big Thief have just become so good at improvising magic into their experimental folkwork that it’s started to sound almost too easy for them to conjure it at this stage. Calling the lead single from their forthcoming sixth studio effort, Double Infinity, “Incomprehensible” is all the more grander of an irony because it’s all very easy to understand that to be the case, even amid Adrianne Lenker’s descriptive river of memories and string theory of thoughts parsing together. Nevertheless, the beauty and wonder in how the trio sees life remains astounding in the worlds Big Thief build from deconstructing the little things into their smallest particles, then nestling it all between their ever-intertwining sonic tapestry of sun-bent acoustics, ebbing percussion, and chiming winds. “But I like a double number, and I like an odd one, too / And everything I see from now on will be something new,” Lenker sings. They’ve got it all down to their own science here.
Big Thief’s Double Infinity will be released September 5th on 4AD.
